Kaiser Elementary School is the home of the Knights. Our mission is to build a community of life-long learners who consistently demonstrate what it means to never give up. We strive to be outstanding citizens who demonstrate bravery and leadership. We commit to show each other that at Kaiser, everyone matters. As a Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (P.B.I.S.) Silver Level school, our students, staff, and families are united in providing Kaiser students with a foundation for success as students and young people in an ever-changing world.

You will find that our expectations are high and that they are matched by our support in achieving them. It is our intention that when Kaiser students move up to intermediate and high school, they will be powerful thinkers with a strong knowledge base, skill set, sense of creativity, and commitment to community.

About Our School

Converted from its original purpose as a junior high school, Kaiser reopened (after a period of closure during an era of declining enrollment) as an elementary school embracing both the Woodland and Kaiser campuses. The two campuses were known as “Big Kaiser” and “Little Kaiser” during the time they were administered as one school. When enrollments swelled, Woodland and Kaiser separated and became two schools.

Kaiser's buildings were upgraded in 2003-2004 using NMUSD's Measure A funds to improve seismic safety, ADA access, and technology connectivity. Floors, windows and other replacements brought about a more code-compliant and effective learning environment. After Measure A, NMUSD undertook landscape improvements at Kaiser that were mostly completed by 2006. Further renovations at the site were funded under the Measure F bond approved by voters in 2005. Kaiser upgraded its science and technology resources with those funds. In more recent years, Kaiser has been the fortunate recipient of several Eagle Scout projects, which have beautified our campus and made it even more functional. Additionally, our school district has outfitted every Kaiser classroom with wireless internet connectivity. In 2014-2015, the Kaiser-Woodland PFO underwrote 130 Chromebook devices. In 2017, Kaiser became a 1:1 Chromebook school. Every 5th and 6th grader is eligible to “check out” a Chromebook to take home daily and care for, which will follow them into middle school.

Kaiser sends its students on to Ensign Middle School for 7th and 8th Grades and then to Newport Harbor High School.

The Kaiser-Woodland Parent Faculty Organization (KWPFO) is a critical part of Kaiser’s success. PFO encourages parent participation in the school both through PFO activities and through direct assistance with classrooms, field trips, assembly programs, and special events. Art Masters, Walk through History, a phenomenal school play, and Science Camp are possible through PFO led fundraising. The organization actively enhances Kaiser's learning program through its volunteer support, funding and networking with community resources.

The Kaiser-Woodland Schools Foundation (KWSF) is dedicated to supporting cutting-edge, lab-based science instruction to prepare youngsters for 21st century career possibilities in fields related to science, technology, and engineering. Our Foundation underwrites the engineering enrichment opportunities all Kaiser students receive.

Kaiser has implemented our new California State Standards in Language Arts and Mathematics. All Kaiser students use the Wonders curriculum for language arts (reading, writing, listening, and research/inquiry skills). Students read more non-fiction text than in the past and use technology for research and to practice keyboarding skills. Our PFO underwrites Renaissance Learning’s “360” program, which includes an extensive library of non-fiction articles for students to read throughout the year. Students in grades 3 – 5 learn mathematics using Bridges in Mathematics. Grade 6 began using Illustrative Mathematics (IM) beginning in 2018. This program serves grades 6 – 8. Current state standards for mathematics instruction emphasize deep understanding of math concepts as well as how to use them in real life. “Story” or “word” problems as well as using more than one procedure at a time are key components of math today.

Kaiser offers extra support for students throughout the year. A reading resource teacher as well as an assistant support emerging readers and we provide special support for learners at all achievement levels during “Response to Instruction (RtI) time throughout the week. Teachers determine our flexible RtI groups based on assessments and student progress. We contact parents with details as needed. With great appreciation to our PFO, Kaiser will implement a new research-based reading intervention program this year.
